Blog Interaction 2 - Preparation for Romans

As we prepare to enter into the study of Romans - what are your expectations, hopes and desires? Has the introductory material on Paul and his theology been useful? What has been most enlightening? What has not been beneficial? What do you hope to arrive at when we get to to the end of the semester for your persoanl spriritual life?

Please note that you must complete two entries for this blog (this is a mandatory blog). The first entry will be answering the above questions. The second entry will be responding to one other classmate.

You have until Friday, October 5 at midnight to complete this blog interaction.

My expectations for this class as we enter into the discussion of Romans is a better understanding of the letter that Paul wrote. One of which we get most of our doctrine from. The introductory material that we have gone over will help in understanding why Paul may have wrote what he did when he did. I love to go back and understand the historical background of passages, and also i've learned it is necessary from hermeneutics. The thing that has been most enlightening is the history with Nero and various other Ceasers that were in Rome at that time. I had never put together the fact that Octavious and Augustus were the same. For me, there really hasn't been anything non-beneficial. I've loved it all. I hope that at the end of this study, my knowledge for the book of Romans and Galations will be well enhanced.

My expectations for this class is to have a better understanding of the context and culture in which these epistles were written. I agree with Jeff when he says that this study is important concerning hermeneutics. I believe it is important to understand the thelogy of Paul because he wrote a large majority of the NT epistles, as Jeff said. This is Aaron "The True Grit" Culver signing out, stay classy ABC.

My expectations for this study is simply high b/c it is a bible course. My hopes are that through study I will become better knowledgeable of Paul's letter. Not only b/c it is mostly our doctrine but b/c it is our witnessing tool. My desire is to know Romans like the back of my hand, in hopes that I may become a better witness. (the way the Lord would have me to witness).

I would have to agree with Jeff about the enlightenment of the historical characters, b/c I never made the connection ethier. Once it was brought about that way it became very cool and interesting. I would also have to agree with Aaron about the theology of paul being important, b/c he DID write most of our NT epistles.

My expectation for this class is to gain an understanding of the book of Romans. The information on Paul has been useful. While an introduction is important I believe the length of time spent on the introduction will take away the time to get into a deep study of both Romans and Galatians. At the end of the semester I hope to have a greater understanding of the book of Romans, this is one of the books in the Bible that I believe will be the most important when reaching the lost people of Australia.

I am expecting to get a better grasp on what Paul was teaching. I have read this book through many times in my life. I am hoping to understand it on a deeper level than just reading through. I have enjoyed the material so far. It has shown Paul in a different light as well as his audience. I have no doubt that the rest of the semester will impact my spiritual life. The introductory material has already been spiritually challenging. My desire is to be transformed more to the image of Christ by the time we have completed Romans.

I agree with Jeff that the introductory material is vital to understanding the letter. However I also agree with Beverly that the amount of time spent on the preliminary does not leave much time for the actual books of Romans and Galatians. My solution would be that there be only one book studied in this semester and maybe a total of three semsters devoted to Paul's writings. Of course this is my own oppinion so I trust it won't go far to change things.

My expectations for this class are to gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the books of Romans and Galatians. It is very important, when studying any book of the Bible, to know who the human author was and what the situation was during the time that he wrote. It is for this reason that I believe this introductory period has been very helpful. It might be better in the future to condense the time taken to lay the foundation so that there will be more time to deeply examine both Romans and Galatians. Learning about the time period in which Paul wrote had been very enlightening, as has been learning about his theology. At the end of the semester I hope to have grown in knowledge and appreciation for the books of Romans and Galatians so that I may be a better witness for Christ.

I like what Beverly said about using the study on Romans in reaching the lost people in Australia. It is important to use our Bible knowledge to reach the people that God has sent us to. It may be the people of Australia or the people across the street, but who ever they are we must be able to put our knowledge to practice or else it is a waste.

I have to agree with what Meisha said about understanding it on a deeper level than just reading through. I also agree with Matt when he talked about a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the books of Romans and Galatians to be a better witness for Christ. This is so true how can we explain this book to others when we are else’s don’t understand it, we can be a much better witness for Christ if we fully understand what we are talking about.

Since I have grown up in church Romans is a familar book. Moving into the study of Romans I have high expectations to learn the background beyond the surface. By the end of the semester I am hoping to have an new appreciation and deep understanding of Pauls writings. I have also enjoyed the introductory material, I think it did a great job of setting the stage for Romans. ~Lindsey
